Both coaches were formerly at Inter Milan where they enjoyed success before engaging in a new adventure. Now Rafael Benitez, who failed to end Liverpool’s long term English Premier League title curse during his six years with the Reds, has dared to challenge his predecessors. In a bold statement following Inter Milan’s Italian Super Cup triumph against rivals AS Roma, the Internazionale boss stated: “Mancini won here, then Mourinho did, and now it’s my turn. I hope to win more than they did. Already this season, we can win six trophies. We have won our first trophy of the year, but that one was won by a group of players, not by the coach.”

"Neeyum Naanum" is Solai Rajan's directorial debut, starring Sanjeev, Sethna, Sampath, Manobala and Singamuthu.

As the Endhiran mystery continues every other film wants to have its day for some time before the big film’s release. As thought there is a sudden increase in releases. Many completed films are in cans and most of them will no be able to wait till Endhiran reign ends and will see the light before.
There is a decree from the council saying only three new releases will be allowed in a week. But it seems the producers are forced to flout the rule for obvious reasons. This Friday six Tamil films and four dubbed films are finding theatres. The much delayed ‘Moscovin Kaveri’ is the main film of this week. Here are the details.
R Films ‘Moscovin Kaveri’ is a film long in the cans after completion for differences between its director, ace cameraman Ravi Varman and producer Ramesh Babu. It is finally releasing this Friday after three years in production.
It’s a love story between a boy Mosco and a girl Kaveri. Model Rahul Ravindran and ‘Baana Kaathadi’ Samantha play the main leads while veteran actor YG Mahendran’s son Harshavardhan plays an important negative role. Santhanam and Seeman are also there.  It’s a fresh youth film and hopes to do well in the season of romance films.

Team Visions ‘Neeyum Naanum’ is written, produced and directed by SV Solairaja who debutes in Tamil with the film. He says this film will drive home the message that ‘man is born to win’ and once you come out of the theatre watching this film you will start thinking about winning ways.
Sanjeev of ‘Kulir 100 Degree’ fame and Nainital beauty Chethna are in main roles. Sampath, Manobala, Singamuthu are also in the cast. Danseuse Shobana plays a cameo.

Neeyum Naanum News : Small-screen's Solairaaja takes a dig at Tamannaah

Remember Solairaaja, who has been making many television serials for various television channels for the past many years. The guy has made more than 7000 episodes of various tele-serials, creating a record of sorts in the small-screen. Now he makes ‘Neeyum Naanum’ and spoke to media persons in detail about his upcoming film and many other things.

The way he commented about Tamannaah, undoubtedly the leading heroine of Tamil films as on date, was something unbelievable! “When Tamannaah, who looks pretty ordinary, can reach the top in no time, the heroine of my film (‘Neeyum Naanum’) is very beautiful and would easily get to the top slot in Tamil films.

Wondering why Solaoraja spoke so lowly of Tamannaah, one of the scribes asked if he was angry with the actress for refusing to act in his film. Refuting the allegaion, Solairaaja said, “Instead of paying her up the fee demanded by her, I can go ahead and introduce at lease four newcomers to the industry. These newcomers, if they go on to become great on their own, would make me happy.”

Continuing his tirade against Tamannaah, Solairaaja says, “Just because beautiful actresses like Trisha and Asin have gone to other language films apparently because of the ‘lure of money’, Tamannaah has made it to the top in Tamil films. As far as I’m concerned, there is nothing special about her,”

Wonder how could Solairaaja be blind to Tamannaah’s stunning looks, dancing and acting talents!

 The Expendables English Film Synopsis:

The only life they’ve known is war. The only loyalty they have is to each other.
They are the Expendables: leader and mastermind Barney Ross (Stallone), former SAS blade expert Lee Christmas (Statham), hand-to-hand combat specialist Yin Yang (Li), long barrel weapons specialist Hale Caesar (Crews), demolitions expert Toll Road (Couture), and precision sniper Gunnar Jensen (Lundgren). Living life in the fringes of the law, these hardened mercenaries take on what appears to be a routine assignment: a covert, CIA-funded operation to infiltrate the South American country of Vilena and overthrow its ruthless dictator General Garza (David Zayas). But when their job is revealed to be a suicide mission, the men are faced with a deadly choice, one that might redeem their souls…or destroy their brotherhood forever.

 The Expendables Hollywood Movie Review:

Anyone who has ever been a fan of the big bloody action movies of the ‘80s must be eagerly awaiting Sylvester Stallone’s old-school testosterone fest “The Expendables”. It isn’t just that it promises the same kind of lean, mean, brute-force action that Stallone’s return to the Rambo franchise “Rambo IV” delivered so elegantly two years ago, it also boasts just about the most awesome ensemble cast ever assembled for such a flick.

As with his two recent comeback films- “Rocky Balboa” and “Rambo IV”- Stallone assumes both writing and directing duties on “The Expendables”, and his thorough involvement ensures that this film is retro in almost every way. The story is textbook old-school- a battle between two groups of mercenaries, one with a conscience who call themselves “Expendables” and the other devoid of it.

The mission that pits them against each other involves the fictional South American island of Vilena where a local despot Gen Garza (David Zayas) is making life a living hell for the locals. But of course, like any fan of Stallone’s “Rambo” films will tell you, the real villain is really an American- this time, a rogue CIA operative turned cocaine peddler Munroe (Eric Roberts). Stallone’s gang is hired by a CIA honcho “Church” played by Bruce Willis, and the meeting between Stallone and Willis also features an uncredited cameo by Arnold Schwarzenegger- the appearance of the triumvirate brief but tongue-in-cheek amusing in its allusions to the Governator’s Presidential ambitions.

So Sly goes about rallying his crew for the mission- the likes of leader Barney Ross (Stallone), knife-man Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), combat expert Yin Yang (Jet Li), weapons specialist Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) and Toll Road (Randy Couture) whose presence seems to be little more than just make up the numbers. Oh, they used to be six strong- their last member the live-wire gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren) who goes off the tracks during the opening rescue mission and is left out subsequently after trying to kill Barney and Yin Yang.

Like most ensemble movies, the sheer number of supporting characters means that most end up underdeveloped- but specifically in the case of “The Expendables”, one can’t quite help but feel that much of the talent is actually wasted in bit roles here. Indeed, the film ends up more often than not feeling like a Stallone/Statham pairing, with scant little for the rest of the lineup to do.

In particular, Jet Li isn’t given much to do except be the butt of the “short” jokes and Mickey Rourke’s ex-Expendable turned tattoo artist Tool is also largely wasted, save for a monologue where he ruminates on his time in Bosnia when he lost his soul. If even the heavyweights like Li and Rourke are given short shrift, you can imagine the fates of Crews, Couture and Steve Austin who plays Munroe’s bodyguard/henchman Paine.

But hey, most of them were probably not hired to act, but to fight- and in this regard, Stallone makes sure that each one of them gets at least the screen time to show off their moves. Statham’s knife-throwing packs cool precision, Li’s kung-fu fighting (choreographed specially by Cory Yuen) showcases his agility, whereas the rest of the cast demonstrate their raw strength. The mano-a-mano clashes here include Stallone vs. Austin (during which Stallone reportedly sustained several injuries), Lundgren vs. Li and Couture vs. Austin; and it’s evident that Stallone gives his all despite being past his prime.

Much of the action is crammed into the last-third of the film, which certainly makes for an intensely riveting finale chock-full of extended fight sequences, loud gun battles and tons and tons of explosions. Yes, these were the hallmarks of the action movies of the ‘80s, and Stallone makes no apology for creating the same over-the-top preposterous mayhem that so defined the blockbusters of that decade. Pity though that his editors chose foolishly to adopt the quick-fire editing of contemporary action films for the fights, almost rendering the parallel brawls between the various characters in the climax to an incoherent blur.

A lot of the first hour is devoted to macho speak between the characters, and watching these guys taunt each other is part of the guilty pleasure that Stallone wants his fans and the fans of the cast he has assembled here to enjoy. It certainly helps when his actors are more than happy to go along for the ride, wearing their manhood on their sleeves while making fun of each other. Advice like “a man who gets along with women is a man who can get along without them” may sound anachronistic, but the actors know they are portraying men from a different generation, for whom riding on motorcycles and getting ink on their bodies were symbols of their identity.

From the characters, the dialogue, the story and the action, “The Expendables” is through and through a throwback to the action flicks of the “Rambo” era. It is also Stallone’s last hurrah for actors like Lundgren, Van Damme, Steven Seagal and even Sly himself, who have in the last decade seen their movie stars fade into oblivion, relics of a bygone era consigned to the shelves of video stores.

Expectations are naturally high with such a cast that Stallone has assembled, and some may inevitably end up disappointed by the lack of screen time or character development for most, if not all, of the supporting characters. Still, this packs the hard-hitting action that fans of old-school action flicks love, and face it- you probably won’t find another movie like this on the big screen in today’s day and age, so treasure “The Expendables” for the rarity that it is.

A movie to look forward this summer 2010, is a mixture of sci-fi, romance, drama, action and adventure film which story revolves around a group of circus performers who in their treasure-hunting trip in a mountainous area in Malaysia, have accidentally released and inhaled some kind of toxic biochemical fumes left by the Japanese during World War II.  Said accident caused the circus performers to undergo different stages of mutation, giving them supernatural powers but eventually transformed them into beast-like creatures.
Aaron Kwok portrays one of the clowns infected with the toxic fumes and is the superhero of the movie.  His love interest is Shu Qi who plays as a current events reporter covering the mutation case.  Other stars in the movie includes Ngai Sing who changed drastically after mutation and will turn against Aaron Kwok; Wu Jing cameos as a special agent who goes after the mutants while Zhang Jing Chu is a mutant hunter specialist in the movie.  Zhang Bao Wen and Tie Nan will also play as two of the mutants.
The movie speaks about courage to oppose even your friends from doing misdeeds for the goodwill of the city and of mankind.  The director wishes to impart the movie’s theme that no matter how a person physically transformed, it is one’s true nature that will stand out in the end. That no one should blame Heaven for any misfortune and that life is not all about pain and sacrifices, that no matter how we become we should always do our best.

The filming inauguration was held last June 24, on a sound stage in Yuen Long, Hongkong.  Director Benny Chan said that he had long wanted to do this kind of film, a superhero movie with kung fu combined with special effects. The film’s production started this July and is estimated to exceed the film’s budget due to the amount of special effects.  The special effects are said to be stunning as those found in the film “X-men Origins: Wolverine”.

Plot:

Three skiers are stranded on a chairlift and forced to make life-or-death choices that prove more perilous than staying put and freezing to death
Released: March 25, 2010
Frozen  English Film Synopsis:
A typical day on the slopes turns into a chilling nightmare for three snowboarders when they get stranded on the chairlift before their last run. As the ski patrol switches off the night lights, they realize with growing panic that they've been left behind dangling high off the ground with no way down.

With the resort closed until the following weekend and frostbite and hypothermia already setting in, the trio is forced to take desperate measures to escape off the mountain before they freeze to death. Once they make their move, they discover with horror that they have much more to fear than just the frigid cold. As they combat unexpected obstacles, they start to question if their will to survive is strong enough to overcome the worst ways to die?

Frozen Hollywood Movie Review:

Just because the closest thing we Singaporeans have to snow is a particular amusement centre which replicates cold climate and snow doesn’t mean we aren’t scared stiff by the idea that we may one day be stuck in the freezing cold, eventually dying from hunger and loneliness. Which is why this drama thriller works like a horror movie for us – in a spine tingling manner that we won’t be forgetting in a short while too.

The story is straightforwardly simple. Watch how we sum it up in one sentence: Three skiers get stranded on a chairlift and are forced to make choices which will decide whether they live or die.

Really, nothing much else happens in the movie, and there is no need for much to develop either, given the circumstances. Director Adam Green knows what is efficient when you are telling a story like that. Wham, bham, hit and go – all in 89 jiffy minutes.

Trust us, in this one and a half hour, you’d be taken on a journey which is much more worth taking than many of those overwrought and bombastic Hollywood blockbusters which refuse to end. It’s no wonder then, that the film premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival to great reception. In fact, the no frills production caused quite a bit of stirs because of its intensity. Yes, it’s really that gripping.

You just need to put yourself in the three protagonists’ shoes, and you’d understand the panic and fear in them as they are left dangling in high air with no way down. Oh, there’s the freezing cold they have to deal with to. Did we mention the ski resort will remain closed until the following weekend? Can things get any worse? Obviously it can, as the three teenagers find out over the course of the movie.

Played by the fresh faced Emma Bell (you may have seen her playing bit roles in Law & Order and Ghost Whisperer), the chatty Shawn Ashmore (you probably know him as Iceman in the X-Men series) and the brooding Kevin Zegers (remember Felicity Huffman’s son in Transamerica?), they are a caricature of adventurous teens of today who would do anything to have that one opportunity to have a little more fun. The young actors may not deliver the most mesmerizing performances you’ve seen, but they do a fairly good job of portraying your average teenager – the type that is neither very likeable nor very obnoxious.

So when they get into trouble and have to fight unexpected obstacles (let’s just say these are situations you don’t want to find yourself in on any given day), you feel the horror and terror they are going through.

The production values aren’t too bad either. Despite the seemingly cost effective setup, the cinematography by Will Barratt is effectively spellbinding, the editing by Ed Marx is precise to the point and the score by Andy Garfield manages to pull your heartstrings a little.

Green knows how to manipulate the audiences’ minds by alternating between simple dialogue scenes (as frivolous as they sound, the script is a spot on if you know what young people talk about these days) and intensely riveting sequences. You’ll hold your breath. You’ll squirm in your seat. You’ll gasp upon knowing the protagonists’ fates. And most importantly, you’ll wish that you never find yourself in such a situation.

One person out of every thousand is born with autism. It follows that China has over one million autism patients. David is one of them: he looks absent-minded, repeats other people’s words, swims with amazing ease, keeps everything at home in exact order… and maybe he is not totally aware of his mother’s death some years ago. Working in an aquarium, Sam Wong takes tender care of this twenty-two-year-old son of his. With the generous help of the neighbors, the two live happily together. Yet, the father understands very well that in the end, he will have to depart from the world, leaving his son alone – and that day will come sooner than everyone is ready to believe.

This film is an ode to a father who is determined to find shelter for his son before it is too late. In the process, the boy achieves a measure of independence necessary for both to let go.

Movie Review:

While this has been billed as Jet Li’s detour from his martial arts filmography, “Ocean Heaven” should really be known for more than that. This is an intimate and deeply moving portrait of a terminally ill father’s (Jet Li’s Wang Xuechang) attempt to teach his autistic son the necessary life skills to survive on his own before he passes away. It is also a poignant tribute to the infinite love that parents have for their children and their unending desire to take care and look after them to their best abilities, no matter the struggle, no matter the effort.

Beginning on a somewhat ominous note, Wang is first seen with his son, Da Fu (Wen Zhang), out at sea with the intention of drowning them both using a large weight tied to their legs. He doesn’t succeed- his son the excellent swimmer unties them both and saves them from certain death. The deed may seem appalling but his motive is in fact humane- a single father since his wife’s death 14 years ago, Wang thinks it may be better off for Da Fu to join him in death than for him suffer on his own when Wang dies.

After the failed suicide attempt, Wang takes it as a sign that Da Fu is meant to live and so sets out to train Da Fu to be as independent as he can be, while looking for an institutional home willing to accept persons with autism. Both these missions turn out equally moving, for they bring to light certain truths that we are either ignorant of or choose to ignore. Though almost at the age of 21, Da Fu knows not simple tasks like taking off his clothes, boiling an egg or riding a bus that younger kids without disabilities would probably have mastered effortlessly.

Watching Wang patiently teach Da Fu the steps of these daily tasks is in itself a testament to the perseverance and love that parents of children with special needs have for their kids, a love so pure and boundless it deserves to be celebrated. Just as you will be led to feel vicariously the patience and determination of these parents like Wang, you’ll also experience an indescribable joy when Da Fu finally picks up these skills- think of these tasks like mini-Everests, and the completion of any one of them equivalent to the sweet triumph of conquering the summit.

On the other hand, Wang’s search for an institutional home for his son highlights a societal gap that deserves attention. As Wang sums up aptly, there is often support for the young and the old in special schools and aged homes respectively, but little services offered for adults with special needs between these ages. The responsibility falls on the shoulders of their parents to look after them, and it is a real concern when these parents ask who is to help them take care of their children when they are too old or frail to do so. Indeed, local viewers may draw a parallel with a recent article in the Straits Times that also similarly highlighted a gap in our special-needs welfare system in catering to adults with autism.

Unlike lesser directors who would have tried explaining the workings of Da Fu’s mind to their audiences, writer/director Xue Xiaolu instead wisely uses his affinity for the world underwater- swimming with the turtles and dolphins- as a motif of his state of mind, different and yet beautiful in its own way. These scenes of Da Fu’s graceful diving in the aquarium, where both he and Wang works, are captured in a ravishingly lush blue palette by Christopher Doyle’s cinematography, set evocatively against Joe Hisaishi’s score and Yee Chung Man’s production design.

Perhaps the only missed opportunity here is Xue’s subplot involving Kwai Lun-Mei’s circus clown turned friend to Da Fu. Not enough time is spent delineating the friendship that develops between the two and the result lacks credibility, especially since Kwai’s character seems too ready to accept Da Fu’s quirks and idiosyncrasies. Nevertheless, the film’s focus is really on the father-son duo of Wang and Da Fu- and in this regard, succeeds tremendously thanks in no small part to Jet Li and Zhang Wen’s sublime yet powerfully convincing performances.

Yes, you should know that even without his fists or kicks, Jet Li still proves to be a magnetic actor with his unassuming portrayal of an ordinary man looking out for his son while looking death in the eye. But really, this film is more important and more significant than just being Jet Li’s first non-action role- it is an extremely moving story of a father’s tireless love for his son, no matter the odds, no matter the challenge. Especially to the parents of children with special needs who have given themselves continuously to the care of their kids, this is a tribute to the depth of your love, the depth of your heart.

Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Four nations tied by destiny when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others. A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction. Caught between combat and courage, Aang (Noah Ringer) discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. Aang teams with Katara (Nicola Peltz), a Waterbender, and her brother, Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), to restore balance to their war-torn world.

Movie Review:

To Mr M. Night Shyamalan,

Upon previewing your recent work, i do have mix feeling upon the thousands of slamming befallen onto your name. Not that they were wrong but credit must be given when due and i must say, it had potential. So much potential that it was such a disappointment that it didn’ lived up to my expectation which i so hopefully wanted it to. As you can tell, I'm a big fan of the Nickelodeon hit show Avatar - The Last Air Bender, the cartoon series. I never knew i could enjoy such an epic cartoon at my tender age of 30. Damn you James Cameron for stealing the title and forced upon M. Night to change the film title, unknowingly, a sign of the fate that is to come. Your work has been on a decline ever since "The Village" but i kept on holding on because, you sir, are a story teller. Lady in the Water was bombed by many but it has a special place in my heart. I know you have this little kid inside you always wanting to come out and play and see the world differently with much curiosity. Just like me. Then came "The Happening", The only gripe I had was the strange quality of acting throughout but i understood the classic film dialog style played in hand. Its a pity "The Last Air Bender" didn't lift you out of the sticky mud that you’e slowly sinking into. Lets layout the good and bad points here.

The bad points:

• Character development. Or lack of it. Everyone seem to be in their own little world and not much chemistry was felt. Even between Katara and Sokka, the sibling bond, somehow felt forced.

• Where was the humour? Sure, there were some sprinkled around but it had a hard time balancing the seriousness and humour. Aang is suppose to be a kid even when he had the daunting task of being The One.

• Of all the characters in the series, Prince Zuko, in my opinion, is the most interesting character. Kudos to Dev Patel. He did quite a performance as the tortured soul. Too bad the storyline didn’t really show the extent of his desperation.

• Awful cinematography. Some shots were badly framed added with boring angles during epic periods. This caused a pacing problem where scenes come too fast and everything had to be gulped down and figure out what we ate later.

• Great opportunity of epic action sequences that could have blown my mind but fell short, fizzled away and gave up. What gives? You had too much power and scared yourself?

Now its not entirely your fault for the downfall. I mean cramming 20, 1/2 episodes into a 1 hr 40 mins time frame is a daunting task. Impossible in my book but i have to give it to you for managing it. To your doom alas.

The good point:

• Great special effects. Water, air, fire bending was a jaw-dropper. LOVED the water effect. Earth, not so much. Awaiting for the sequels where they truly show the power of earth bending. Its going to knock our socks off.

• Awesome soundtrack. Fell in love with it in the teaser trailer. Loved it even more on the official site. It’ll definitely be in my iPod play list.

• Jackson Rathbone (Sokka) and Dev Patel (Prince Zuko) had potential. I can see their character growing. Just need the rest to catch up.

Like how the film plot drives Aang to let go of his emotion in order to control and release his full potential power as an Avatar, M. Night should have listened to his own script. Take a rest while you let others helm your ideas cos, man, you have some wild ideas. So don’ you give up. Keep on telling your stories and seed those ideas into our dreams and mind.

PS: ‘evil’ better be good. I’ hyperventilating just by the trailer. But that’ what i said about Air Bender too...
The world is divided into four kingdoms, each represented by the element they harness, and peace has lasted throughout the realms of Water, Air, Earth, and Fire under the supervision of the Avatar, a link to the spirit world and the only being capable of mastering the use of all four elements. When young Avatar Aang disappears, the Fire Nation launches an attack to eradicate all members of the Air Nomads to prevent interference in their future plans for world domination. 100 years pass and current Fire Lord Ozai continues to conquer and imprison anyone with elemental "bending" abilities in the Earth and Water Kingdoms, while siblings Katara and Sokka from a Southern Water Tribe find a mysterious boy trapped beneath the ice outside their village. Upon rescuing him, he reveals himself to be Aang, Avatar and last of the Air Nomads. Swearing to protect the Avatar, Katara and Sokka journey with him to the Northern Water Kingdom in his quest to master "Waterbending" and eventually fulfill his destiny of once again restoring peace to the world. But as they inch nearer to their goal, the group must evade Prince Zuko, the exiled son of Lord Ozai, Commander Zhao, the Fire Nation's military leader, and the tyrannical onslaught of the evil Fire Lord himself.  Written by The Massie Twins

Berlin 36 German Film Synopsis:

Berlin, 1936. The U.S. threatens to boycott the Olympic games because of Hitler's racial policies. They insist that Nazi Germany allow Jews on their team, and specifically demand the participation of Jewish high jumper Gretel Bergmann (Karoline Herfurth), the leading high jumper of her time. The Nazis reluctantly decide to include her, but to make sure she doesn't win a gold medal, they send in a rival, the unknown Marie Ketteler (1) (Sebastian Urzendowsky). Their coach, a rabid Nazi, uses every means in the book to undermine Gretel's preparations. Yet she consistently outscores her other competitors, including Marie. Two weeks before the games, Gretel is barred from participating; the Nazis' goal to eliminate the team's Jewish competitor, yet still win a gold medal, seems within reach. But Gretel and Marie have forged a strong friendship during

Berlin 36 Germany Film Review:

We live in an unfair world, and we know it. In fact, we are already so sanitised by this that nothing much surprises us anymore. Not people who pretend to be nice to you while harbouring thoughts of how to make use of you to their advantage. Not people who put up a front to appear professional while conniving on how to take charge of the situation. No, not even the glory of sportsmanship inspires us anymore. Which is why we are not particularly taken aback that something this unthinkable happened in history – that sportsmanship was manipulated by the state to serve certain political agenda. And mind you, this happened some 74 years ago.

Such is the darkness behind the glory of the Olympic spirit.

The year is 1936, and the great and mighty Americans are putting pressure on the Germans because of their refusal to allow Jews on their Olympic team. They will boycott the Olympic Games if the Nazis do not lift that ban, especially in the case of high jumper Gretel Bergmann. The Nazis eventually allowed the poor girl (who migrated to Britain and became a champion there) to come home, but sneakily sent a rival Marie Ketteler to upset the situation. A friendship between the two athletes and before anyone knows it, a tension that could upset a nation’s glory is formed.

Karoline Herfurth plays the Jewish athlete Bergmann (you can tell when she doesn’t shout “Hail Hitler” like the rest of the characters) with conviction, and the indomitable spirit shines from her commendable performance. Looking comfortable in both sports and civilian outfits, Herfurth exudes a certain class and charm that we have not seen on the big screen for a while. Meanwhile, Sebastian Urzendowsky plays her teammate Ketteler who is, well, no point trying to hide here – a man. He has the looks and built of a fine young man, but somehow the filmmakers managed to portray a “woman” who is torn between the truth and falsehood. Maybe it’s “her” curly hair, maybe it’s “her” somewhat sultry look, or maybe it’s just “her” demeanour as a “lady”, but we managed to continue watching all 107 minutes of the movie thinking that “she” is one of the girls.

What seems to be a predictable storyline turns out to be a multifaceted display of human emotions (thanks to the all rounded and competent performances of the cast), where the most basic human feelings of pride, honour, humility and respect are exhibited through the characters’ objectives and motives. There is always a looming feeling of dread as the film proceeds, as you fear something ominous for our heroine who deserves so much more than being chucked aside due to political reasons.

But history has already inked its place in time, and what already took place cannot be reversed. Some may call it a lesson of survival, some may call it a reminder of what cultural and historical conflicts can bring about, while some others may call it a tale of human instincts. So when the 96 year old Gretel Bergmann appears at the end of the film for an interview on the rather unfortunate incident that happened 74 years ago, you may just forget the unfairness of the world dishes to us, and feel the real human emotions that are genuine and heartening.

SHANGHAI -- Action hero Jet Li gives a respectable turn as a terminally ill father grooming his autistic son to survive on his own in "Ocean Heaven" -- a decent, if orthodox job by Xue Xiaolu. Xue off-sets some of the wholesome soppiness of this genre by keeping the tone light, the story simple and steering clear of grueling ordeals. Compared with "Together," another father-son story that she co-scripted and Chen Kaige directed, it is less melodramatic and artificial. Set mostly in a marine park in Qingtao province, its interpretation of autism owes less to "Rain Man" than to "The Big Blue," awash with holistic, quasi-fantastical overtones, enhanced by Christopher Doyle's ravishing aquatic cinematography.

While the Chinese government, schools or NGOs may approve of this topic, "Ocean" goes against the grain of current market realities. A Jet Li who doesn't fight or perform stunts is a tough sell overseas. Back home, it might be overlooked by an audience infatuated with period war epics and stir-crazy comedy-farce. Hopefully, a summer release following its premiere as the opening film of the Shanghai International Film Festival can draw moderate family viewers in Chinese-speaking territories.

Since his wife's death 14 years ago, Wang Xingchang (Li) has been the sole guardian of his 21-year-old autistic son Dafu (Wen Zhang). When Wang is diagnosed with liver cancer, he tries to end both their lives in the sea, but Dafu is too good a swimmer to drown. Since then, Wang throws himself into the twin missions of finding an institutional home for Dafu, and training him to manage on his own.

The visits to different institutions, apart from giving a survey of special needs welfare in China, add naught to the dramatic flow or emotional interest; whereas the scenes of Dafu learning to perform the most basic tasks like boiling an egg, putting on his clothes or riding a bus can come across as hideously patronizing. The way Wang ooh-ahs at Dafu's every move is a ploy to emphasize his fatherly instinct and stoicism that appears to confuse autism with mental disability. However, the meaning of these initially insipidly repetitive scenes finally emerges in the coda to quite moving effect.

The finest moments are found in the marine park, where Wang works as a technician and Dafu is in his element frolicking with the turtles and the dolphins. The fluid shots of him gracefully gliding underwater reinforce the autistic man's affinity with a different world or reality. The lucent blue palette of the underwater shots and the aquarium's melancholic, cavernous interiors contrast atmospherically with humble street locations that are lit and shot in the gloomy hues of overcast weather.

Billed as the lead actress, Kwai Lun Mei is under-used as an itinerant circus performer who strikes up a friendship with Dafu. Given no back story and smothered in clown face makeup half the time, her interactions with Dafu are too sappy and superficial.

Gao Yuanyuan, who appears in a flashback as Wang's wife, leaves even less of an impression. It is the daily life episodes with kindly neighbor Aunt Chai (Zhu Yuanyuan) that are most plausible and warm. The tact with which Wang handles her love which he cannot requite is subtle and touching.

Li is largely credible as an ordinary working-class father, even if some might think he is trying to consolidate his public image as a philanthropist. Still, his role's gambit to come back to Dafu in a different guise after his death is almost gag-worthy. Cynics will also find Dafu's character too angelic, and the society presented squeaky clean, with all characters doing the right thing without a trace of intolerance.

Production values are tip-top -- besides Doyle, such big names as Joe Hisaishi and Yee Chung Man provide quality music and production design respectively without overwhelming this small drama with excessive stylization.

Salt Synopsis:

Salt film narrates the story about Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) who is a CIA officer who swore an oath to duty, honor, and country. When she is accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy, Salt goes on the run to clear her name and ultimately prove she is a patriot.
Using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative, she must elude capture and protect her husband or the world's most powerful forces will erase any trace of her existence.

Salt  Hollywood Movie Review:

Who is Salt? Is she an operative CIA agent or a KGB spy sent by the Russians?

This question probably doesn’t matter after you walked out of the cinema hall as you are likely unable to recall much of anything else besides the fact that Salt is just another relentless action flick that stars one of the hottest movie star in Hollywood right now, Angelina Jolie Voight or add a Pitt to it if you wish.

Jolie plays Evelyn Salt, a CIA officer who is being accused of being an undercover Russian spy by a defector. So what is Salt going to do to prove her innocence? She runs. You hear that right, she runs away from cops and her fellow colleagues including Ted Winter (Liev Schreiber) and William Peabody (Chiwetel Ejiofor) in addition to the boggling fact that she is being 'activated' to assassinate the President of Russia. But her priority on hand is to look for her missing arachnologist husband. Thus begin the continuous action pieces that will make any respectable action star proud and for this reason alone, you might chose to forgive Kurt Wimmer’s implausible writing.

Eerily similar to "The Bourne Identity" franchise, "Salt" relies heavily on its high-octane action sets although discarding any good narrative treatment seen in the former. Its Bourne + that Bond from MGM meets The Fugitive meet the combination of Tomb Raider and Mission Impossible. But this is what you get if you hire Kurt Wimmer for the gig, the latter who came up with "Ultraviolet" and last year, "Law Abiding Citizen" is not renowned for any subtly or hefty Tom Clancy’s sort of conspiracies. Instead what you get is an undercover brainwashed operation initiate by the Russia to send their agents to penetrate the soil of the United States so as to await orders to strike at the right time.

As a customised star vehicle for Jolie (for the record "Salt" was initially offered but turned down by Tom Cruise who found it too much akin to his Mission Impossible series and subsequently the role was rewritten to fit Jolie) and a product for the summer blockbuster slate, "Salt" definitely fits the bill. Director Phillip Noyce who returns to the studio arena after a number of years helming independent flicks proved he is still an adept hand in crafting a big-budgeted Hollywood summer flick. The old-school Australian helmer who is renowned for his political-charged action thrillers, "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger" delivers the goods at ease and with the help of stunt choreographer Simon Crane and veteran editor Stuart Baird, the collision and explosion gets bigger with each setup not forgetting the dizzy, frenetic editing. Smoke bomb, a DIY bazooka and even a pair of undies is utilized by Salt to make her exit. The props department should deserve some credit at the next Academy Awards for the latter.

The main star herself, Angelina Jolie was listed on IMDB for performing most of her own stunts. Watching her leaping from the roofs of moving vehicles, jumping from train, riding furiously on a stolen bike and dangling in an elevator shaft, at least you know the lady is worth every damn nickel on her million dollars paycheck. This is a star movie that practically sells on Jolie’s charisma and face alone (just look at the poster for proof) and it works big time. Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor both respectively good actors are left on the sideline with the occasional bickering scenes that doesn’t actually require an ounce of acting muscle from the duo.

Despite a half-baked espionage plot that involves the what, Cold War? What’s that for the younger generation? And a story that twists and turns without much of a satisfactory conclusion, the movie succeeds with its flawless chase sequences, marathon stuntwork and a gutsy leading lady. DC comics, you know who you should call for a Wonder Woman.

The Pillars of the Earth Movie Plot Summary:
“You might enjoy this show a lot, if you’re a fan of this kind of thing, as long as you don’t need it to be, in any grand sense of the word, actually good.” a term invented that conveys the message.
The term “guilty pleasure” doesn’t quite apply to a project like Starz’s The Pillars of the Earth, debuting tonight. The miniseries, based on a Ken Follett novel about power struggles and cathedral building in 12th-century England, doesn’t seem guilty about anything at all, nor does it seem to intend guilt on the audience’s part. It’s positively virtuous, in a way: a big, old-fashioned historical epic of sweep and passion and melodrama, hearkening back to the days of the old you-could-learn-something-from-it network miniseries like Shogun. But despite its epic scale and impressive cast, the miniseries seems out of place and time.

The story is set in 12th century England, which right away presents a sartorial obstacle for Starz. HBO did just great with "Rome" because people back then apparently wore little, if anything at all. And Showtime scored with "The Tudors" because, say what you will about the court of Henry VIII, the Renaissance fashion police were on duty 24/7.

Pity the poor "Pillars" designers, though: When it comes to 12th century England, there's only so much you can do with sackcloth.
But what "Pillars," launching Part 1 on Friday, lacks in visual appeal it more than makes up for with over-the-top performances from an all-star cast. That's a good thing, because if you try to figure out what's actually going on, and who's out to get whom and for what reason, you'll give yourself a headache.
At heart, this is a heroic melodrama, elevated a bit by a rather intriguing focus on how architecture helped move England toward a more economically robust future. The story turns on the rivalry for the English throne between King Stephen (Tony Curran) and Queen Maud (Alison Pill).
As power shifts back and forth - not without conflict, of course - our primary attention is focused on the people caught in the middle, chiefly for a while on the enlightened Tom Builder (Rufus Sewell), who is hired to build a cathedral for Prior Philip (Matthew Macfadyen) in Kingsbridge. Others on the "good guys" side of ye olde ledger include Aliena (Hayley Atwell), daughter of the martyred Earl of Shiring (Donald Sutherland), and her brother Richard (Sam Claflin), a milquetoast who becomes a powerful warrior.
Building a church sounds simple, but it doesn't fit in with the nefarious schemes of Bishop Waleran (Ian McShane), who's more than willing to throw anyone under the hay wagon to become the next archbishop of Canterbury. Then there are the ruthless Regan Hamleigh (Sarah Parish) and her sociopath offspring, William (David Oakes), who will do anything to get ahead, or to chop off a few if need be - heads, that is.
Although the first part of the story is carried by Tom Builder, the focus of most of "Pillars" is on Jack Jackson (Eddie Redmayne), the young son of the convicted "witch," Ellen (Natalia Wörner), who is a gifted sculptor and soon takes over the campaign to build the cathedral. He's learned all the architectural tricks of flying buttresses and the like while in France in exile, because his beloved Aliena has married Tom's dorky son.
The script has a good amount of borrowed mythology woven through the plot of "Pillars," including the biblical story of the prodigal son, and some repurposed Shakespeare as well.
But screenwriter John Pielmeier has done a creditable job of condensing Follett's building block of a novel. Yes, he strips things down to the sex and violence bits, but without entirely decimating characterization and nuance.
Did I say nuance? Well, it may be there in the script, but when it comes to actually performing the parts, it's all Katie bar the door as far as the likes of McShane, Sewell, Parish and Oakes are concerned. There's so much scenery being devoured by several of the major players that when the new cathedral is destroyed midway through the series, you'll suspect the actors ate the darn thing.
McShane, wearing a demonic hairstyle that seems to have been colored with Grecian Formula 666, savors each verbal morsel of dialogue, as he slithers from mock innocence whenever he's caught on the wrong side of the succession battle to cold-eyed wickedness as he dispatches those in his way.
Director Sergio Mimica-Gezzan has wisely balanced the overblown performances with more grounded work by Macfadyen, Atwell and Redmayne.
Although Macfadyen is the most visible constant through the entire miniseries, Redmayne, who just won a Tony for "Red" on Broadway, dominates whenever he is onscreen, even during his early scenes when he doesn't seem to be able to speak.
Or maybe it's just that he's the only really memorable good guy in the melodrama, because, in truth, it's the bountiful hamminess of McShane and the other evildoers that makes "Pillars" great fun, even if it's never going to be a candidate for "Masterpiece Theatre."
